Mark 1:22 – states “The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority-quite unlike the teachers of religious law.”
What did the people hear from Jesus’ teaching that was so different from the other teachers they were accustomed to hearing? The difference was Jesus taught with authority, unlike the others. What is this “authority” and how did Jesus get it? Authority is defined as “the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.” This means that Jesus taught with the right to enforce obedience. The other teachers taught the religious laws. Jesus acknowledged the religious laws when he taught. But, he also taught the laws with the power and right to enforce obedience and make decisions concerning those laws. In Matthew 5:43-48 – Jesus says “You have heard the law that says, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy’ But I say, ...”. Jesus’ authority gave him the right and power to make decisions concerning those laws. Why or how did Jesus possess this authority, but the other teachers did not? The answer is, Jesus had a relationship with the sovereign God in Heaven, the author of those laws. None of the other teachers of the law had a relationship with the God in heaven. They only had a relationship with the law. They spent time in the law. They learned of the law. They knew the law. But there is no love in the law. Romans 4:15 states “For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it…” The law condemns us and confines us from being made right with God. Romans 3:20 states For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.” Jesus spent time with the God in Heaven. Jesus learned of the God in Heaven. He knew the God in Heaven. Jesus’ relationship with the God of Heaven was so close, Jesus called him Father. Jesus taught from his relationship with the God in Heaven. The God of Heaven is love. When the people sat under the others that taught the religious laws, they only heard how wretched and sinful they were. But, when they sat under Jesus’ teachings, they heard loved they were. And it AMAZED them.
